guoache and watercolor painting

one word comes to mind when I think about guoache and watercolor. that word is humbling. by nature, watercolor is light and transparent while guoache reads bold, opaque and flat. they are both nuanced, though, and far less forgiving than oil and acrylic paint. i enjoy their flexibility and often go for them in my sketchbooks. they are perfect for trying new things, prepping for a larger work on canvas and taking along with you en plein air or on overnight trips. both fit comfortably in your carry on and give you endless hours of pleasure in those in between moments synonymous with travel.

i describe them as humbling because as in most art forms but particularly with these two mediums, the surprise factor, the lack of control.. the i have no clue where this is going feeling.. is amped up in the most wonderful way. all i can say is, enjoy the ride. take pleasure in the process, and leave the rest for the magical and unexpected results along the way.
